Introduction
The Department of Public Management at the Polytechnic of Namibia started off as a department in April 2003 when the decision was taken by senate to separated the then Department of Economics and Public Management. Prior to this period the said department was known as the Department of Economics and Public Administration. But with the coming in of degree programmes new courses and curricula were developed and a decision was consequently taken to rename Public Administration into Public Management, in line with the new trends in the field.

The Department of Public Management currently offers a four year degree in two areas of specialisation namely; Public and Development Management; and Public and Regional and Local Government Management. However in line with the Polytechnic of Namibia's policy of recognising students' effort, a certificate in Public Management is awarded to students upon their completion of first year of study, and a diploma upon completion of the third year.

The said programme is also offered on Distance Education mode. However due to a great amount of work put into developing study material for the course, the distance mode to date is at second year level with the introduction of the third level in 2004. Plans to develop fourth year materials are underway.
