Our service courses |
| The syllabi are especially designed to cater for the different abilities. English for Academic Purposes (EAP511s) is an intermediate level. Professional Writing (PWR611s) and Professional Communication (PCO611s) offer Business English. Each course is taught over a period of 1 semester. English for Academic Purposes, Professional Writing and Professional Communication are credit-bearing and will be considered exit level courses. |
| |
| English for Academic Purposes, as the first exit course, aims at completing and rounding off the student. All students have to pass English for Academic Purposes. Before going into the work force, students need to be equipped with a good working knowledge of English. The theoretical and practical aspects of all skills are taught, and speaking skills are dealt with in great detail. |
| |
| Professional Writing and Professional Communication are also exit level courses. The special, advanced language skills required for business purposes are taught, e.g. communication theory, meeting procedures, and report writing. These skills prepare students for the tasks they will have to perform when employed in either the private or public sectors. |
| |
| Professional Writing and Professional Communication have an equal level of difficulty and English for Academic Purposes is the prerequisite for these courses. |
| |
| All students have to pass English for Academic Purposes (EAP511s), as this is the first exit level course. In addition, different fields of study will require students to pass either Professional Writing and/or Professional Communication. |
| |
| |
| For whom? |
 |
 |
All students have to pass Language in Practice B or be placed accordingly in order to enter English for Academic Purposes. Professional Writing and Professional Communication are optional. Those students who wish to acquire the advanced language skills used in the business environment usually choose to add these modules to their courses. |
| |
| Why? |
 |
 |
| In English for Academic Purposes students have to learn to communicate confidently in the official language. The private and public sectors need competent workers - English is crucial in efficient and successful communication. These courses also promote the personal development of the students, aiding them to understand themselves and others. |
| |
| When students are employed, they soon realise that they need to improve their English proficiency and learn the more formal skills. These are offered in Professional Writing and Professional Communication. Students who master the skills required in the business environment are in high demand for employment, and often receive promotion immediately after completing these courses. Professional Writing and Professional Communication aim at developing the student as an employee, or eventually, employer. |
