  Overview of the Department
What is Mechanical Engineering
Mechanical Engineering is that branch of Engineering that deals with the design, production and use of machinery and tools, as well as the generation and transmission of heat. This field is often broken down into sub specialties such as building and designing nuclear plants, automobiles, railway equipment or spacecraft. These mechanical Engineers are sometimes called nuclear Engineers, railway engineers and aerospace engineers.

Mechanical Engineers play an important role in such areas as fossil fuel, solar, wind and geothermal energy, energy storage, waste disposal and management, water reticulation, environmental control, fuel research and ocean engineering.

It would be hard to find an area or an object in everyday life that is not in some way affected by a Mechanical Engineer.

History of Mechanical Engineering at Poly
The Mechanical Engineering Department started as part of the college of out of school training in 1980 together with Automotive, Civil and Electrical departments. The student enrolment was on the average 10. These were mainly apprentices from the surrounding companies. School leavers later found out that it was easier to find employment in Windhoek if they had done technical studies, so many of them became interested in Mechanical Engineering hence the college was forced to enrol private students.

The college used the Technicon curricula, which made use of the N-courses. These were phased out in 1996 paving way for the S- courses. The same year, the Polytechnic of Namibia was established and the Mechanical Engineering Department moved to the now main campus building of the Polytechnic. The Department is currently housed in the state-of-the-art Engineering complex at the corner of Brahms & Haydn Streets, Windhoek , Namibia .

Mr. Van Staden became the first Dean of school of Engineering and HOD of Mechanical Engineering until 1996. One of the pioneer instructor and former HOD, Mr. Muller is now heading the CCID (community college international trust).

International Collaborations
The department of Mechanical Engineering seeks to have international collaborations for staff and student exchanges. These collaborations are useful for curricula benchmarking joint research collaboration and standardization. So far the department has an active collaboration with the Purkyne University of the Czech Republic . We currently have three students studying there for a B.Sc and another three students that will spent a semester. The department hopes to attract more collaboration with international institutions.

Laboratory Facilities
The Mechanical Engineering laboratories are equipped with state-of-the-art equipment in material testing, stress analysis, mechatronics, mechanics and heat transfer. Our modern production laboratory is equipped with computer aided manufacturing equipment.
