| The Department has reviewed it's curriculum in 2004 for the qualifications National diploma in Civil Engineering, Bachelor of Technology: Civil (Urban), Bachelor of technology: Civil (Water) and the elective for a SADC M.Sc programme in Integrated Water Resources Management. |

| In 2008, the department introduced a professional Bachelor of Engineering: Civil which is an NQF level 8 qualification. The first class was made up of 25 students.
Programmes and courses focus on the needs and demand of local/regional and international Building Contractor Companies, Government Sectors (Building, Maintenance, Water Supply), Consulting Engineers Companies, NGO's and Parastatals, City &Town Councils, Bulk Water Supply Industry. The department strives to stay on the edge of technology development and dissemination, local and regional capacity building through networking and resource sharing. |

| ... include research and consulting services in the sectors water & environment, geo-technical engineering, urban and transport engineering, structural engineering and project management. The department owns unique equipment in the Construction materials and water engineering laboratories. The equipments in the construction materials laboratory include the thermal conductivity, concrete crushing machine, flexural beam testing machine, hydrometer, consolidation machine, shear box machine, marshal test machine, penetrometer, micro cover meter to mention a few. Tests and services that can be offered by the construction laboratory are, hydrometer, specific gravity, sieve analysis, consolidation, soil shearing strength, plasticity, compaction, Compressive strength test on all standard bricks and blocks, compressive strength test on all standard cubes, bending test on all standard kerbs, aggregate testing (grain size crushing, flakiness and elongation), abrasion test. The equipments in the water engineering laboratory include the spectrophotometer, turbidity meter, Ph, TDS, Dissolved Oxygen, Conductivity meters, BOD and COD machines, Soil analysis kit, Irrigation water analysis kit. The services that can be offered by the water engineering laboratory include water and wastewater quality analysis (physical, inorganic and organic), soil fertility analysis and irrigation water analysis.
