The current supply of mining engineers and metallurgists worldwide is far below the need. This shortfall is expected to increase in future with the opening of new mines. Mining engineers currently operating in Namibia are either Namibians trained abroad or expatriates. It is against this background that the Polytechnic of Namibia has established a Mining Engineering Department to meet future demand for Namibia in particular and the SADC region in general.
With the advice of the Namibia Industrial Advisory Board (NIAB) and the Chamber of Mines (CoM), the course has been designed to an international standard as confirmed by many practicing engineers and professors both locally and overseas.
The core programme (BEng) will take four and half years to complete which will include nine months for the internship. In addition to the department, a fully-equipped Geo-centre will also be established at the Polytechnic for consultancy and research work. Its expertise will be in the focus areas of mineral processing, rock mechanics, mine ventilation, mining methods, mining machinery, mine planning and environmental engineering.
