| Hospitality Training Centre (HTC) |
| The Department of Hotel & Tourism Management originates from the Hospitality Training Centre (HTC). The HTC was established 10 years ago as part of the Academy and was partly funded by the Hospitality Association of Namibia (HAN). |

| Basic Skills Cookery Courses were initially offered but these were soon supplemented by other basic skills courses e. g. Basic Room Attendant Skills, F & B Waiter Skills and Bar Person Skills, due to a need identified by the Namibian hospitality industry. |

| As the need arose for more diversified training to fulfill industry needs, a series of five Resort Operations Courses were developed to assist management and supervisory level training needs at the former Government Resorts & Restcamps, now NWR. |

| These courses were specifically developed with the intention of providing employees of these establishments, who had no formal qualifications but industry experience, with a qualification. |

| The HTC also undertook tailor-made Mobile Training for hotel staff in rural areas. |
| |
| The need for a proper training Hotel School was identified in the 1992 White Paper on Tourism. The vision was that this training facility would supply industry with fully trained graduates who would be the future hotel staff and managers of Namibia. The subsequent 1996 White Paper and Draft Tourism Policies in line with the National Development Plan also reinforced this view especially as tourism in Namibia is the third largest generator of GDP and currently supplies over 26 000 jobs to Namibians. The industry is seen as a major force in creating jobs which is one of the key objectives of national policy. Consequently the training of tourism and hotel staff to international standards is a priority. |

| Department of Hotel & Tourism Management |
| With a clearly identified need, the HTC in conjunction with the Polytechnic of Namibia commenced offering National Diploma courses in Tourism Management and Hotel Management in 1998 as well as 6 National Certificate Courses. |

| By the end of 2000 the HTC had been integrated into the Department of Hotel & Tourism Management of Polytechnic of Namibia The same year the first graduates successfully completed their courses. |

| Hotel & Tourism Training School |
| While student enrollment has been fairly low it is anticipated that student numbers will increase considerably in the future. |
| |
| It is expected that the Hotel & Tourism Training School, which is currently under construction, will be operational in 2003. Consequently, courses have recently been restructured to fit industry's requirements and to give students much more practical experience as well as equip them more thoroughly for the industry job market. |

| With this in mind it is vital that the future Hotel & Tourism Training School provides students with sufficient "hands on" training in a real live environment. It is envisaged that the School also fulfills the needs of the institution in offering food, beverages, accommodation and banqueting services to visiting lecturers and staff as well as the general public |
