| Distance education is a unique method of instruction and study. It is unique in the sense that instruction and learning take place with the tutor and the students in different places for most of the time. You, as the student, must therefore take additional responsibility. It is important that you organise your time and adjust your study approach to succeed. | If you live in the Windhoek area, contact a COLL Student Support Officer directly for any questions regarding administrative inquiries, registration, study materials, fees, etc. |

| If you live outside of Windhoek, please consult the Regional Coordinator, at the closest regional centre. At the Regional Centre you may complete your registration, receive study materials, submit assignments, write examination, access the internet, access library and study facilities, attend Saturday tutorials and pay student fees. |

| The web-based Student Kiosk at the Polytechnic of Namibia allows you to check on your financial, academic and progress status. Since this is personal information, it is on a secure website and must be accessed with your student number and a personal identification number (PIN). You may request a PIN at the site. Obtain your study materials from either the COLL Material Issue Desk or from your Regional Centre. Instructional materials are paid for through your tuition fees. Your first tutorial letter will indicate if there are additional prescribed readings and books |
| that must be purchased. Read through the study guide and the first tutorial letter thoroughly. The COLL Material Issue Desk may be contacted directly at: (264-61) 207 2235. |

| Particulars concerning the prescribed textbook(s), which the student must buy, are available in the study guide and first tutorial letter. Prescribed texts are available at the Regional Centres for reference purposes only. Students are strongly advised to order their prescribed textbooks from the bookshops in good time, as this will prevent any unnecessary delays and disappointments. |

| COLL does not sell prescribed textbooks and cannot order these for the student. Books are prescribed for most courses and can be ordered directly from the distributors or via the Regional Centres. All books can be purchased from the book supplier, Book Den at Wernhill Park, in Windhoek, Telephone: (061) 239 976. |

| Note the due dates for the submission of assignments. Decide how much time you should allow for each course and how you are going to divide your time between working on assignments, reading of recommended books, studying the study guide and your other day-to-day responsibilities. Due dates for assignments and information to assist you with this activity are available in the Information Manual for Distance Education Students. | Take Advantage of
Vacation Schools
and Weekend Tutorials |

| During the year, two vacation schools will be offered in Windhoek on the Polytechnic of Namibia campus. These schools will take place during April and August. During Vacation Schools you will be tutored and be able to ask questions about your course. |

| You are encouraged to directly contact your tutor if you have questions regarding academic matters. Upon registration full contact information is given to you for your marker-tutor. |

| All registered students at the Polytechnic of Namibia have free email access through a student web-based e-mail system. An email account for each student is active for the duration of your studies. This free service allows you to retrieve your e-mail from any PC that has Internet access, anywhere in the world. | Prepare for and Take Examinations |

| The examination and the examination period are the same for distance education, full-time and part-time students. A timetable for the exams in all Polytechnic of Namibia courses may be found at the following link: Examination Timetable (not available yet) |

| In order to be admitted to the examination of a course, a student must obtain a semester/year mark of at least 50%. |
| |
| |
| Obtain information regarding first and second opportunity exams from a COLL Student Support Officer, the Polytechnic Examination Department at (264-61) 207-2106 or your Regional Centre. |
| |
| Students use their student number as their examination number. You may also be requested to furnish proof of identity. For this purpose you must show both your student card and an identity document with your photograph. Cellular phones are not allowed in the examination rooms. |

Polytechnic regional students may sit for their examinations at the Polytechnic Regional Centres, Mariental Teachers’ Resource Centre, Luderitz Community Library, Oranjemund NAMDEB Technical College, and the Karasburg Teachers’ Resource Centre and in Rosh Pinah. |
