Welcome by the Rector of the Polytechnic.
This is the first step in your orientation
process. Dr. Tjama Tjivikua welcomes all
freshers, transfer and international students
to the Polytechnic family. The academic
expectations are clearly rolled out for you.
 
 
 
08:30 - 09:30 (Auditorium 1)
Student Services
Ms. Frieda Shimbuli, Dean of Students
Student Services includes: Health Services, Social Welfare Services, Student
Counselling and HIV/AIDS Coordination, Job Placement Services, Accommodation,
Sport and Culture, Hostel and Kitchen Services.
 
09:30 - 10:00 (Auditorium 1)
Academic Support Systems; Dr. Michael Tjivikua, Director: CTL
The Director for the Centre of Teaching and Learning (CTL) will introduce Academic
Support Systems to all new students. The intent is to expose students to academic
support systems before classes start.
 
10:00 - 10:30 (Auditorium 1)
Computer Services; Mr. Evrard Laurent, Director Computer Services
New students will be exposed to IT facilities and how to access Internet and
email facilities.
 
10:30 - 10:45 Tea break

Global HIV/AIDS Epidemic:
Mrs. Alta McNally, Student Counsellor & HIV/AIDS Coordinator
New students will be provided with information on the Global Impact of HIV/AIDS.

Library Services: Ms. Sheila Ndlovu, Chief Librarian
The Chief Librarian will introduce Library Services offered. These services include:
Inter library loan services, full text data bases, seminar rooms, group study areas
and 25 internet stations.
 
11:45 - 12:15 (Auditoriums 1)
Auxiliary Services Mr. Calicious Nawa, Assistant Bursar
The Assistant Bursar: Auxiliary Services will provide information pertaining to safety
and security on campus.
 
12:15 – 12:45 (Auditorium 1)
Office of the Bursar: Ms. Sadia Brendell, Bursar
The process includes payment of bills and settlement of outstanding student debt.
 
12:45 – 14:00 Lunch break

Office of the Bursar: Mr. Corneels Jafta, Registrar
The Registrar will disseminate information on the registration process and the
functions of the Office of the Registrar.

The session provides new students with information about the School of Business and
Management such as the qualifications offered, duration and length of studies, pre-
requisite to courses offered as well as the expectations of the various departments
within the School/Faculty.

The session provides new students with information about the School of
Communication, Legal and Secretarial Studies such as the qualifications offered,
duration and length of studies, pre-requisite to courses offered as well as the
expectations of the various departments within the School/Faculty.

School of Natural Resources and Tourism

The session provides new students with information about the School of Natural
Resources and Tourism such as the qualifications offered, duration and length of
studies, pre-requisite to courses offered as well as the expectations of the various

New Student Orientation BBQ
At the end of the 1 st day of the New Student Orientation programme, the Students'
Representative Council (SRC) welcomes all students to the Polytechnic with the
Polytechnic tradition --- the big BBQ feast. The social event provides new students
with the opportunity to meet and socialize with student leaders.

Creative Thinking: Session 1 (Facilitator: Dr. Michael Tjivikua)
This session deals with the Breadth and Direction, the treatment of ideas, factors
involved, rules, consequences and sequels, objectives, planning, priorities,
alternatives, decisions and other people's views.

Creative Thinking: Session 2 (Facilitator: Dr. Michael Tjivikua)
This session will deal with the six hats methods of thinking. Thinking is divided into
six different modes, each of which is represented by a different colour hat. In
summary, these hats help us deal with emotions, benefits caution, creativity,
information, and organization of thinking.

Student Tool Box and Campus Tour
The SRC session provide new students with the opportunity to meet student leaders
of the Polytechnic and dissimilate information on the “Student Tool Box” which
include the Polytechnic Act No. 33 of 1995, Polytechnic Statutes, Polytechnic
Prospectus, Student Services Handbook, Academic Calendar, Activities Calendar,
Student Development workshops, Polytechnic Website, Office of the Dean of Students
Web pages, the SRC Constitution and SRC Annual Activities.
